Highway 78 Trailhead in Escondido
San Diego County, CA
Race Capacity: 400
The event starts at the San Pasqual Trail and the first 4 miles wind through orange groves and local farms on a mix of single and double track trail. Cougar Mountain ascends 365 feet and most are capable of running to the top, with some needing to run/walk their way up the trail. The trail down the backside of the mountain is mostly single track and lots of fun to run. The last mile is flat again before runners get to the turn around point. The San Pasqual Trail is part of the Sea to Crest Trail that connects historic Julian to theSan Diego coast at Del Mar.
Special Invite: Any runner that breaks 2 hours in the Cougar Half will automatically qualify for an invitation to the “Dirty Invitational Marathon” being held on September 29th 2013. This exclusive fullMarathon is by Invitation ONLY and limited to the first 200 Qualified Races to register.
About This Race … and it’s role in the Animal Series:
The Cougar Trail Half Marathon is brought to you by Dirt Devil Racing.com and is the third Trail Half Marathon of four races being held in 2013 as part of the “Animal Half Marathon Series.” All our trail races are incredible, but this Cougar out-and-back race is a newer addition to our series, and enjoyed by all.
If you plan to do the Animal Series you MUST run all FOUR races in the Animal Series. The Wild Horse Half in January, the Foxy Half in April, this Cougar Trail Half Marathon, and the final race the Raptor Ridge Half in October completes the Series … so do NOT miss this third race!)
If you do NOT plan to do the series and just want to run a great trail Half Marathon … this is still one of the faster and most scenic Half Marathon trail courses that we offer. It sold out as its Inaugural run last year, and we expect the same this year! So act fast and don’t delay on registering thru Active.com
Course cut-off: The course cut-off time is 3 hours. No finisher awards will be given for any racer not completing the course within 3 hours.
Aid Stations: There will be 5 aid stations on the course.
It is MANDATORY that all runners carry at minimum 12 oz. hand bottle for hydration. This is a trail race and we are trying to eliminate the use of cups at Aid Stations to truly go green. We need you to do your part. We will meet you half way this year … but may go completely green in 2014. So get your practice runs in now!
Directions To The Start:
Take I-15 and exit Via Rancho Parkway, go east. Take right on San Pasqual Valley Road. At intersection with Hwy 78, take a right, following the signs for the Wild Animal Park. Go 2.75 miles PAST the Wild Animal Park, cross over the bridge and take a right at Bandy Canyon Road. Take another right into the dirt lot, and follow the signs/Parking Staff directions for the trailhead parking area. Please pre-print directions to ensure you know where you are going before the morning of the race.
Parking: Parking will be in the adjacent dirt lot and throughout the neighboring community. Please respect the Parking Staff and follow their directions, and the neighborhood by being quiet when you arrive, and be sure to arrive early to account for the time it will take to walk to the trail head if you are NOT in the dirt lot. Please carpool if at all possible.
Race Check in: 6:00 am – 6:45am
Race Start Time: 7 am
There will be TWO WAVES for the Half Marathon start, and the waves will be separated by only a few minutes. Your wave is linked to your bib, so do not jump waves or you will be disqualified and noted as DNF in the results.
Prizes: All Half Marathon finishers receive a super unique finisher’s medal and moisture wicking race logo shirt. If you run all 4 Half Marathons in the 2013 “Animal Series” your final medal will be the interlocking medal required to complete the MEGA SUPER MEDAL. (pictures coming soon)
Half Marathon prizes provided to Overall and Age Group Winners. Please see the Race Prizes Page for more details.

Pat and his Professional Team of Photographers will have your pictures from the race on display at the After Party for you and your loved one’s to see … and they will be awesome!! You can have Pat take post-race pictures of you, your family, your group, or your team to capture your special day. All race-day photo purchases will be discounted!!! See Pat for details.
Unable to make the after-party, go to…… Photos By Pat ….. to purchase all your race photos … even previous season if you’ve run with us before.
Race Results: Race results will not be available at the finish line. Please do not interrupt the professional timing team. Just as you want an accurate time, so do the racers that have yet to finish behind you. We will have the Overall & Age Group Winner times available at the Post-Race Party & Awards Ceremony. All race times and distance placing will be available on the DirtDevilRacing.com website no later than the Wednesday after the race.
Post-Race Party and Awards Ceremony: Dirt Devil Racing is in the process of teaming up with a great location to host our Post-Race Party & Awards Ceremony! If a Breakfast Buffet is not offered on Active.com at the time of registration, you will be notified via your Active email address about the pricing, location, and directions. Purchasing the Buffet is not required to attend ANY post race party. It merely ensures a seat at the post-party and saves the racer a few bucks on a great breakfast. At-the-door buffet purchases will cost more money and seating may require a slight wait time.
After Party locations are always a short 20 minute (or less) drive from the race site and will be on the way home for most people residing in the San Diego area. For directions from the race site to the Post Race Party, please check back HERE prior to race day.
Post-Race Party/Buffet typically starts at 10:30am … Awards at 11:30am!
Packet Pick-up Location: Packet Pick-up will take place at the San Diego Running Institute (SDRI) on the Friday and Saturday before the race:

Please read ALL of the “MANDATORY READ” race day rules prior to race day to ensure you have the best experience possible.
Refund Policy: Refunds are allowed up to one month prior to the race date minus a $10 Refund Processing fee. Absolutely NO refunds will be given beyond that date for any reason … and there are never bib swaps allowed for any Dirt Devil Races….. (Again, see the airline analogy above.) If you would like to request a refund prior to the cut off deadline, please email our Race Director: Krista@SDRi.net ….. tell her you need a refund, and be sure to supply the “COMPLETE DETAILED ACTIVE REGISTRATION” … this is the only way a Refund is possible. You can find this by going to Active.com and searching for your name and the races you have registered for. The Detailed Registration will contain all the fees you paid, your mailing address, and the shirt size you ordered. Emails that fail to contain the required information will not be responded to. (Do NOT request refunds via any other method, like facebook, SDRI phone calls, etc. Those requests do not make their way to the Race Director.)
