Half Marathon Course Description:  This local San Diego Trail Half Marathon runs around beautiful Otay Lakes near the USA Olympic Training Center.  The race starts at the South side of the Lake and runs along the Lake shore with a short jaunt to the upper lake and back..

***NOTICE: Actual Course distance is 13.3 miles! This is a trail race and therefore distances can’t always be exact. Don’t worry, we won’t charge you extra for it. *** It is MANDATORY (HIGHLY SUGGESTED) that all Half Marathon runners carry at minimum 12 oz. hand bottle for hydration. This is a trail race and we are trying to eliminate the use of cups at Aid Stations to truly go green and sustainable. We need you to do your part. We will meet you half way this year … but may go completely green in 2018.  So start running with a handbottle or backpack now!

10K Description:

The 10K is flat and fast with lots of lake views and single track technical trail.  The turn-around point is at the main aid station.

Post-Race Party and Awards Ceremony: Will be held on site at Otay Lakes City of San Diego Reservoir.  Please bring something to eat and drink (unless you like beer….we are sponsored by Mike Hess Brewing Company so we will have beer!)

The Wildhorse Trail Half Marathon and 10K is brought to you by Dirt Devil Racing.com and is the second in the Half Marathon and Progressive Race Series.  Being one of four trail half marathons (and probably the friendliest course), Wildhorse promises to deliver the ultimate in a trail running experience. If you plan to do the series, do NOT miss this second race! (If you do NOT plan to do the series … this is still one of the best Half Marathon courses we offer. It sold out last year, and we expect the same this year!  The Wild Horse 10K is flat and fast with mostly lake view single track technical trail.

Signed up already! Looking forward to it.

  2. jesus ramirez says:

active is not letting me sign for the wildhorse half. Is this the only way to register?

  3. Bethany says:

I was wondering how to register for the animal series all together? I know that was offered last year; however, I was unable to make them all so I couldn’t do it. Does that still exist this year?
    Thanks for your help!

    • Dr. Runco says:

We are working on getting the entire series open for registration Bethany. Currently we only have the Wildhorse open. The other will be open soon but you will have to register for each one separately but register early and you will get the early bird discount for each.

  4. John Childs says:

    My first trail half…can’t wait!

  5. jeff ingraham says:

have a decent (but not an exact idea) of where this trail is. is there another way to find the exact route? there are alot of little side trails down there and i would like to mimic this as close to possible to start training. thanks!

    • Dr. Runco says:

it is pretty accurate. Out to the turn around from the Marina then to the upper lake then back to the marina. the gps on the website is really good. Follow it and you should be fine

  6. michelle says:

WooHoo! We’re excited to be able to run the route when we’re in SD for a conference, from Columbia SC.

  7. Art Smart says:

How do I apply the club member discount when signing up with active? Is there a dicount code ? Looking forward to this race and the grand slam series.

  8. Mike Bickel says:

I just signed up for the race in Jan. I runmany half and full marathons but this is first trail run. What can I expect on the course? Is ther any water stops or do I need to pack my own? Thanks.

    Mike

    • Dr. Runco says:

You will love the Wildhorse Trail Half Mike. It is a beautiful trail and will have 5 well stocked aid stations. We always encourage runners to run with at least a hand bottle though…..it saves cups and in the event we run out of water (it has happened once) you have plenty to drink.

  9. t says:

    Confused by two things:
    1) Why do you charge $11 for race participants to attend the race awards ceremony?
    2) Why can’t I pay with AMEX credit card?
    Please explain.

    • Dr. Runco says:

      1. It is for the breakfast at Rock Bottom Brewery
      2. That is an active.com policy to not take AMEX I guess. I have nothing to do with that although I can inquire.

      • t says:

        Doc,
        1) there was no choice to attend the Awards Ceremony w/o doing the breakfast …the ‘choices’ were either breakfast OR “I can’t attend.”

        2) I just paid for another event on Active.com last week and I used my AMEX.

Hey, I’ve gone and signed-up for the Wild Horse Trail Half Marathon but had to dig around to find an old VISA/MC I rarely use. Also I guess I’m gonna miss the Awards Ceremony (not that I stand even a remote chance of being on the podium, lol) b/c I don’t want the buffet breakfast.
        Regards,
        – tom

        • Dr. Runco says:

You can go to the awards ceremony and not get breakfast just choose “can’t go”. it is a pre-fab template.

I will look into the Amex issue…..I do not remember ever choosing to not take AMEX…again it is Active.com taking the fees then cutting me a check so I really do not care which cards they use. It is common for business to not take AMEX because of the fees they used to charge. I take AMEX in my office and SDRI so I have no reason to not take it on active.com

  10. nathan s. says:

Is the event sold out already?

  11. Josh S. says:

Any spots still available Dr. Runco??

  12. susana says:

    Hi Dr. Runco,

When I registered for the race I paid for the post race breakfast. Can you please provide the address where it will be held?
I just emailed my attendance confirmation, thought it was not necessary but I dont want to miss out.
    Thanks,
    Susana

  14. RILEY says:

Wow! That scrambled my sentence…Can’t wait to pound the trails this weekend!

  15. j says:

    when will results be available??

  16. Jim W. says:

Are there any photos available from the race? If so, where can we find them? Thanks for a great race and a fun time!

  17. Martha Zarate says:

This was a great race. Well organized, plenty of hydration stations. Fun, fun, fun. I will do it again next year.

  18. “Hello Dr. Runco,

I want to join the race but I do not know where it is being held and what are the entry tickets. Can you please provide me some details regarding the location and timings?”

  19. Desiree says:

    Hello,

If I register for this event, this would be my first Half Marathon of any sort – would participating in a “trail” half marathon present more challenges then your run-of-the-mill half? Also do you have many first timers, or is this for a more advanced/experienced runner?

    Thank you!

    • Dr. Runco says:

trail halfs are notorious for being more difficult than road halfs. We have many 1st time trail runners who love it.
This race happens to be sold out but the Wildhorse Half in June is a flat and fast trail half and is open for registration.

  20. Joel Centeno says:

    Hi Dr. Runco,

Many thanks for organizing these races. They are just super awesome! One question about the 2016 Wild Horse Half, can you comment on what the medal will look like this year? Thanks.

  21. Gia says:

I can’t stand running with bottles — is the 12 oz bottle an absolute requirement? 5 aid stations will be plenty hydration for me. Thank you!

  22. Thanks for giving these sort of terrific details.

  23. Oytun Egemen says:

    Hi
Do you give finisher medals to 10K racers?

  24. Oytun Egemen says:

    Hi
Does 10k runners get a medal at the end of the run?
    Thanks

  25. Tom says:

Is hydration still mandatory? if so, is a 10 oz water bottle acceptable? I really don’t drink much running halfs – even the trail ones.

  26. deanna beck says:

I ran the Wildhorse 1/2 on Saturday. Please advise, when will the results be posted and where can I find them? thank you!
