Course Description:
The Wild Horse Trail Half Marathon is brought to you by Dirt Devil Racing and kicks off the 2012 San Diego Running Institute’s Half Marathon Animal Series.  Being one of four trail half marathons (and probably the friendliest course); Wild Horse promises to deliver the ultimate in trail running experience and is the gateway into the SDRI/Dirt Devil Racing Animal Series.

Situated around Otay Lakes and the USA Olympic Training Center, the Wild Horse Trail Half Marathon traverses some of the most spectacular surroundings that can be found in San Diego County.  Runners will start at the boat launch on the South side of Otay Lakes with sweeping views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.  As the race begins, runners can take advantage of the flat, fast start for the first mile following the dirt/gravel road around the Lake towards the Olympic Training Center.  Once there the trail dips down along the lake edge offering well groomed single track on the way to the first of many footbridges and aid stations.  After the first aid station the trail bends around the lake and continues on single track trail right along the lake shore.  The trail remains flat and fast winding amongst the trees until aid station two at mile 3.7 near Otay Lakes Road.  Depending on the lake water level runners will either continue along the lake shore or be diverted onto Otay Lakes Road for a brief period of time before continuing around the lake.  Runners arrive at the turnaround and 3rd aid station and should pause to take in the view of this inspiring San Diego resource.  The views from the third aid station are amazing.  On the return trip, runners will be diverted to Upper Otay Lakes (and the smaller of the two) and then return onto the single track going back the way they came.  The race finishes back at the boat launch and your car where you will be cheered and greeted by the Dirt Devil staff and crew in addition to family and spectators.

Wild Horse Trail Half Marathon is a flat, fast trail with spectacular terrain and some technical single track to be enjoyed.  It is part of the SDRI/Dirt Devil Grand Prix Series, as well as the Montrail SoCal Trail Half Marathon Cup.  It is a great introductory race for road racers interested in trail running.  Wild Horse is well marked and supported by six aid stations.  Runners of the half marathon will receive a hoodie with race logo, amazing finisher’s medals, great schwag and a post-race party at The Corner Restaurant and Bar in downtown San Diego.  Overall winners and age category winners receive additional prizes that are awarded at the The Corner Restaurant and Bar post-race party.

Tired of the same old boring runs? Try something new.  Dirt Devil Racing provides well supported and extremely well marked runs around some of San Diego’s most spectacular lakes and trails.  Sign up now.

Prizes: All Half Marathon finishers receive a unique finishers medal and moisture wicking race shirt.  5K fun run participants will only receive the unique race technical shirt.  For Half Marathon prizes provided to Overall and Age Group Winners please see the Race Prizes Page.

Any information about elevation? I ask only because I will be doing a 15k two weeks before and another half a week before. You guys always have a surprise or two on every course so I expect nothing less from you on this new race. Thanks.

I noticed the change in name from Painted Rocks Half Marathon to Foxy Run Half Marathon. I know I am old but that new name evokes a song by Jimi Hendrix that does not have much to do with running. But, more to the point, if you are going to rename it, why not consider Trail of Tears Half Marathon? Given what happened there in February 2010, that name could be a fitting tribute. None of us who run in that area regularly can ever forget. Just a thought.

  3. Nick Spicuzza says:

It would be a mean joke, but I think you should name it the Foxy Run 10k.

  6. Jim says:

I teach at Southwestern College, not far from there. I’d like to go there and check out the trails and will definitely run this race. Are the trails clearly marked? It’s a pretty area. Any advice would be great. Thanks.

    • Jim says:

Thanks. Where exactly does the trail start. I ran some there last week. I started at that little park on Wuest and ended up running out past the Olympic Training Center and actually found a nice single-track trail for a little bit. I’d love to run the trails for this race sometime soon. Thank you

  7. Marilynn says:

Hi! I’ve never done a trail run before (run regularly but just on the pavenment). DO you think I can swing this half-marathon as a first-time trail run?

  8. Jim Wenzell says:

Okay, I am registered! I am very excited for this race. I’ve run trails a lot but have never done a trail race, though I’ve run six half marathons and two full ones. About how many runners will there be in this race? Thanks!

  17. Rachel says:

I am trying to sign up but the active.com page says registration is unavailable? Is that because the 1/2 is full or is something else going on?

  18. kerry says:

my running partner just surprised me today with a registration for the 1/2! we will be traveling from northern British Columbia, Canada, a distance of 1643 miles to come and enjoy your race. my wife is not a runner, but a beginner power walker. she is interested in doing the 5k. any reason for her not to? happy new year!

  20. Jim Clark says:

Quite a race today. Talk about value for your money – 13.6 for the price of 13.1! Beautiful course with a slice of every type of trail running thrown in. Add the weather and could not it have been more perfect. Had the race been one week prior, it would have been the first half marathon mud run any of us had been in.

  21. Is there a 2013 race? there doesn’t seem to be any active.com registration for the 2013 running of this race. also why call it a half when the mileage is about 17.5?
