2013 Cougar Trail Half Marathon Race Report

2013 Cougar Trail Half Marathon Race Report

Everything about the 2013 Cougar Trail Half Marathon was better than 2012.  Starting with the gate and parking area being open to the overcast skies shielding runners from the San Diego sun the 2013 Cougar delivered.  The Cougar Trail Half is the 3rd half marathon in Dirt Devil Racing’s Animal Point Series.  All runners that finish the Cougar Trail Half in less than 2 hours qualified for the Dirty Invitational Trail Marathon to be held at Green Valley Falls on September 29, 2013.

The race went off in 3 waves which is the Dirt Devil way.  Wave starts help ease the impact on the trail allowing the faster runners to stay in front off the slower runners.  This eases the need for passing which can be difficult on single track trail.  Some of the runners did not heed the admonishments of the race director when told to either not wear headphones or if they really needed music to only use one earpiece.  While it may not seem obvious to these runners they are, in fact, being rude and inconsiderate as they can not hear faster runners behind them yelling “On your left!”  If you fit this profile Dirt Devil Racing respectfully and politely is asking that you cease and desist from this practice or get your slow ass in gear so no one has to pass you!

For those that were able to run this challenging course in under 1:50:00 the clouds provided to you by Dirt Devil Racing shielded you from the run and provided you with a pretty cool race through some really cool terrain in the historic San Pasqual Valley.  You ran through orange groves, along the San Dieguito River, along the Sea to Crest Trail and over the highest peak in the Valley……………twice!  Anyone slower than 1:50:00 did not have the benefit of the clouds as they instantly disappeared exposing the runners to the unforgiving sun.  Many of you hung in there and managed to break 2 hours anyway!  I had the opportunity to meet many more of you who said this was your first half (you picked a freakin doozy for your first!) and others that said it was your first trail race.  As you found out trail and road racing are quite different and can require different strategies.  I have already received many emails from participants who said they are now hooked on trail running!  If that is you I suggest you join the Dirt Devils Trail Running Club.  It is free and you will get to see all of the trails of San Diego without the fear of getting lost….who knows we may even convince you to run an ultramarathon!

For those that took the glory of 1st-3rd male and female we salute you!  Congratulations on your hard earned win and we hope you enjoy the special home brewed Cougarlicious Trail Ale we made special just for you.  First place winners were provided free shoes from our title sponsor Merrell, second place socks and hats from Injinji and San Diego Running Institute and third place Road ID and Hydration from Accelerade.  Below are your winners.  After the winners are links for overall results, pictures by Pat (remember Dirt Devil Racing is now providing FREE race photos…..yes I said free.  Go check em’ out), Dirt Devil Trail Running Club and a really cool video of the race that is under 5 minutes.

I want to personally thank all of Dirt Devil Racing’s staff and volunteers from the bottom of my beer glass!  Thank you.  We could never pull this kind of event off without all of you.  You are appreciated!  We also want to thank all of the runners who competed in the Cougar Trail Half and for supporting trail running!  You guys are awesome and we thank you!  Thank you to all of our sponsors, especially Merrell shoes.  We appreciate your involvement and support of Dirt Devil Racing and the support of trail running.  Lastly we would like to thank the San Dieguito River Park and Senior Ranger David Hekel for allowing us to put on such a cool event.  We hope to see all of you at the Raptor Ridge Half in October.  Do not wait to sign up!  That race sells out faster and faster every year.
