Half Marathon and Progressive Series Pricing
You must sign up for early bird/Tier 1 pricing for each individual race. Sorry but there is not an additional discount or way to sign up for all 4 at once.
- You must run all 4 races to be eligible for the series. Run all 4 Half’s or the 5K, 10K, 15K and Half.
Half Marathon Course Description: This local San Diego Trail Half Marathon runs around beautiful Lake Hodges right off of Interstate-15. The race starts at West Bernardo Park and crosses the new stone suspension bridge from the South side of the Lake to the North side. After crossing the bridge runners head west along the North Shore trail overlooking the lake. After passing through the marina runners enter a wooded area and run along the lake shore. This race is an out-n-back.
***NOTICE: Actual Course distance is 13.3 miles! This is a trail race and therefore distances can’t always be exact. Don’t worry, we won’t charge you extra for it. *** It is MANDATORY (HIGHLY SUGGESTED) that all Half Marathon runners carry at minimum 12 oz. hand bottle for hydration. This is a trail race and we are trying to eliminate the use of cups at Aid Stations to truly go green and sustainable. We need you to do your part. We will meet you half way this year … but may go completely green in 2018. So start running with a handbottle or backpack now!
5K Description:
The 5K is flat and fast with lots of lake views and single track technical trail. There are no aid station for the 5K so please bring your own water. This race is a loop.
Post-Race Party and Awards Ceremony: Will be held on site at Rancho Bernardo Community Park. Please bring something to eat and drink (unless you like beer….we are sponsored by Mike Hess Brewing Company so we will have beer!)
About This Race … and it’s role in the Half Marathon Animal Series:
The Foxy Trail Half Marathon is brought to you by Dirt Devil Racing.com and is the first Trail Half Marathon of four Half Marathons being held in 2018 as part of the “Animal Half Marathon Series.” All our trail races are incredible, but this Foxy out and back race is probably the most scenic course in our series.
If you plan to do the Animal Series you MUST run all FOUR races in the Animal Series. The Foxy in April, and the Wildhorse on June 14th are the first two. Raptor Ridge in August, and the final race (still undisclosed) in October completes the Series … so do NOT miss this first race!)
If you do NOT plan to do the series and just want to run a great trail Half Marathon … this is still one of the faster and most scenic Half Marathon trail courses that we offer. It sold out last year, and we expect the same this year!
Race Results: Preliminary race results will be available at the finish line. Please do not interrupt the professional timing team. Just as you want an accurate time, so do the racers that have yet to finish behind you. We will have the Overall & Age Group Winner times available when the race is finished and results will be posted by the next day on ultrasignup.com. All race times and distance placing will be available on the DirtDevilRacing.com website no later than the Wednesday after the race.

Things to Do:
Thank you too our Sponsors!
Victor…please note that the Foxy Half date is incorrectly shown on the Dirt Devil website as occurring on April 22nd, 2013. It actually takes place on the 28th. Cheers, Marcus
it is corrected! Thanks for the heads up!
Hi, I will be in visiting San Diego the weekend of the race. Is the trail paved or is it all dirt? I’ve done a few 1/2 marathons but nothing on a trail path. :-)
All trail, all dirt. A mix of double track and single track…..relatively flat for trail racing
When does this wonderful-looking half marathon traditionally sell out? I have a friend who may/may not come down that weekend, and we want to run it. I don’t want to sign up until he knows his schedule for sure, but I also don’t want to miss out…
All of our Half Marathons typically sell out 4-6 weeks prior. With the recent running boom and race craze races are selling out even faster. I would not wait beyond 6 weeks to ensure getting in. We do supply refunds up to 1 month out…..
Thanks for the feedback!! I read about the one month refund, but bummer of bummers, I got sick 3 days before the last half in Chula Vista and couldn’t even get out of bed the morning of the race. Can’t wait for this one, but I sure wish I could’ve done all 4 for the bragging rights…
You can break 2 hours and qualify for the Dirty Invite……that’s some braggin rights!
unfortunately, I can’t break 2 hours even on a road half…
Dr. Runco,
Any idea of where the buffet will be yet? Signing up and wondering whether logistically it makes sense to pre pay for the buffet?
Thanks
I am working on a couple of places that are close to the finish area. A couple of the places that really want it I feel are just too small….but we are working on it. I can promise you that it will NOT be North of the finish area….
Will there be a pre-run weekend? Didn’t some of your other runs have a pre-run weekend where we informally met and ran through part of the course?
yes….probably in 2 weeks
Did I miss any announcements about a pre-run? I haven’t logged in to this web page in a while…
Funny you should bring that up. I was just about to announce it for this weekend
Maybe it’s just my computer, but the Out and Back maps aren’t showing me anything except a big satellite picture…should I be seeing a marker of some kind showing the course trail?
When I open the “View Larger Map” link beneath the satellite picture, I see the following error:
File not found at http://www.trainingpeaks.com/sw/kml/ICMUOWDI7JD3SPO6ULMMFVDBCM
I think some kind of overlay is broken?
We are looking into it. Thanks for the heads up
With the impending move, I assume the packet pick up for Foxy will be at the new digs?
Is there spots still available to register for the half? I hope so we just bought airlines tickets to go. My boyfriend did this before I checked to see if registration was still available.
Yes you can register on active.com
Can i still register for the foxy half marathon? I hope so my boyfiend bought us airline tickets to go before I registered. Please advise :-)
please register on active.com
Is the information for time/location of the Friday packet pick-up out yet? All I’m seeing is TBD’s. Thanks -j
Did you not get the race email and course preview invite? This was in the email “Race day is approaching fast. Race bib pick up will be at San Diego Running Injury Institute’s new location at 8525 Gibbs Drive near the 805/163 Kearny Mesa area. The place is pretty awesome so come check it out!”
Is there a particular time during the day on Friday?
Typically we do between 11am-6pm on Friday and 11am-3pm on Saturday
Thanks – I didn’t get that email either. Will they be posting the course preview on the website? Or maybe resend the emails? Thanks!
I am working on getting the GPS coordinates up and going. There might be another course preview…not sure yet. There will be another email going out soon with a few announcements.
Will there be s-caps (or something similar) available at the aid stations?
There will be electrolyte drink and gels at some aid station but we do not typically provide salt pills for Half Marathons.
My husband is injured and cannot do the race. Is it possible to transfer his race number to a friend?
Also, where can I find the packet pick-up details?
We do not allow bib transfers Carla. I am copying your email to my co-race director Krista. She will respond to you.
When will the time and place for packet pick up be posted?
An email was sent out. You must not have given active.com your correct email. Please email Krista@sdri.net with your correct email asap
Will results and official times be posted soon?
should be up today
My husband and I are about to sign up for the half marathon! Just curious if everyone receives a medal?
No Allison…….we are giving something other than a traditional medal…..all runners will receive a finishers award though. We have found through racer feedback that traditional medals are “tired” and “non-functional”, “sit in my closet”, “have no practical use” and similar comments. For this reason we are switching to a more usable and functional finishers award
I was interested in the 5k… I’m new to running races… I was curious if there is any prize for the 5k… All the prizes listed are just labeled under the half marathon…?
Yes there is a prize… I still need to update the website. All runners 5K and Half will receive a technical moisture wicking running shirt in addition to another functional award when they finish the race. The male and female winners will also receive an additional prize
I
really enjoyed the Raptor Ridge 1/2 last year, but I wish I had found out about it sooner. I really want the 4 pint glasses and a commemorative pitcher. What do I need to do to get that this year? The progressive or the animal series or will you still be doing that?
The animal series is what you want Lisa. Sign up for all 4 Half Marathons at once to ensure entry, save cash and earn your glasses! This year (and last) the pitcher was a Stainless steel full color Logo growler!! Go to https://www.dirtdevilracing.com/2014-racing-schedule/ and follow the link to ultrasignup.com
You might just kill me with the 4 halfs. I was hoping you would say the Grand Slam like last year with the progressive series.
we also offer up the 4 Progressive Races the same day Lisa. FOxy 5K, Wildhorse 10K, Stairway to Heaven 15K and Raptor Ridge Half…..ya just don’t get the glasses….or growler.
What??? No glasses or growler for progressive series this year. Did I understand that correctly?
yep……gotta do the half series to earn the glasses and growler…..but we have something else in store for the progressive series :)
Is there a 5K course map as well? Does it simply go around the peninsula by West Bernardo Park? Thanks.
I might make a 5K course map…in the past I have it leave West Benardo Park….go left and around the hill along the lake….take the single track West Bernardo Rd. Make a right up the bike path and into the parking area on the right….then right down the trail and back to the gazeebo!….but I might make it different this year :)
Hello!
I organize a trail running club for my son’s school. We have some great kids running the trails each week. Do you know if any of your events have a kid-focused race? Something in the 1-2 mile range? THANKS!
It is a terrific idea and we have discussed it. Currently we do not except for the Foxy 5K on April 6 at Lake Hodges. This is an open run and is not child specific. I will bring it up at our next meeting.
Hi Dr. R – I don’t have much trail experience; I’ve only run the Black Mtn. 4K in 2013. I did OK – the most challenging part of it was the steep downhill in the first section of the race. You use the term ‘single track technical’. I’d like a little more information regarding what you mean by technical. When I hear the term ‘technical’ I think of rocks that may be difficult to maneuver. Could you elaborate please. Thanks!
Your thinking is pretty accurate. Compared to road running trails can be “technical”. “Trail skill,is the combination of your ability to pick good lines through technical trail, your dexterity and proprioception [the sense of how moving parts of your body physically relate to one another in space], and the muscular fitness of those muscle groups that get used on the trail but not as much on the road.” It is different than road running as you have to concentrate and use more dexterit. You jump over rocks instead of homeless people and the scenery is far more beautiful :)
Great information – thanks. On a scale of 1 – 10, what would you rate the difficulty of the Foxy 5K?
I am not sure which race to use as the benchmark for the 1 or the 10 so I chose to use the Silver Strand Half as a 1 (it is flat and fast) and the Oriflamme Canyon 50K as a 10…it has 5 miles of climbing 500 feet per mile…5 miles straight.
Foxy 3 no steep hills but a few “grades”
Wildhorse 2 flat, flat, flat
Stairway to Heaven 8 has 4 hills that are not short and 1 staircase with 767 stairs going up the infamous “Stairway to Heaven”
Raptor Ridge 6 well you have to go up and over Raptor Ridge 2x since it is an out and back. The first 4.5 miles and the last 4.5 miles are flat as can be…through farms mostly
I just noticed you were asking about the 5K…not the Half. The 5K is flat :)….but technical (single track with beautiful Lake views)
Thanks Doc R. It sounds like something I can probably handle. If I fall and hurt myself then I’ll have to set up an appointment for you to fix me up. :)
I ma sure you will be fine and will enjoy the experience as well. NO falling is permitted :)
On the Stairway to Heaven you said there are 767 stairs going up. Do you have to go back down the stairs as well?
No. The course is a giant loop…you only go up….once
Hello Dr Runco,
I’m an avid runner and have completed a few half and marathons. I’ve never done any trail running at all, but I’ve just registered for the Foxy and half series. Do you have recommendation regarding training such as meeting up and club?
Thank you,
Hanh
you can join the Dirt Devil meetup club for free…just request membership. They run Tuesday and Thursday 6am plus weekends. Trail running is similar to road running except it is more
1. fun
2. challenging
3. rewarding
4. no cars
5. requires more concentration
you can also check out http://www.sdri.net/running-resources/races-runs/san-diego-runs/san-diego-trail-runs/ for some trail running locations and ideas
Last year, for the Raptor Ridge half, I was asked my running time when I signed up. I was given a wave or start time. I was not asked this year when signing up. Are
we divided by time/pace again and when will this be determined?
it will be a mass start with “corrals”
What are the two different course maps? Is the out and back slightly different? Thanks!
one is out and one is back
When will foxy 2014 results be posted?
they were posted 10 minutes after the race Brigid! Go to ultrasignup.com and check it out!
Good Morning, wondering when I’ll see my mug shot on some pics from the Foxy Trail Race?? Thanks for a great race by the way..tons of fun (once I had finished!!) :)
I am looking into it Gemma. Normally Pat has the photos up in 3-4 days. They are not up yet. In the meantime enjoy the race video
Any discount for signing up for the whole series at once?
the discount is in the early bird pricing. If you sign up now for the rest of the races it is much cheaper than waiting.
I WAS WONDERING IF THERE IS A MEDAL THAT GOES WITH THE 5K. THANK YOU!
yes
Maybe I’m just missing it but when I try to look up the
2016 Foxy Trail half results the site shows only previous years. Please
help…
Thanks in advance,
Rich
results are posted on the race website
When will the 2017 Races be posted? I’m trying to decide between this race and another one for April!
I just moved to California and have been running trails with a local YMCA but haven’t done any races yet. I am very interested in doing the 5k but I usually run with my dog and didn’t see anything about running with pets. Is this allowed?
I am sorry no running with dogs is not permitted at our current events.
It shows the race both 1/2 and 5k are sold out for the 14th. Is this true? I have 5 people that want to sign up. Can you guys let me know.
sorry just saw this. Yes it had sold out….hopefully you came on race morning and were able to get in
Where are the results from the foxy trail race on Saturday 4-14-2018?
They are posted on ultrasignup.com on the Foxy page and on Dirt Devil Racing Foxy Page
are we still getting the beer growler if we finish all 4 half marathon?
yes you are :)
