The Wildhorse Half Marathon and 10K is the second race in the Dirt Devil Racing Half Marathon Series and Progressive Series. It has been taking place since 2011 at Otay Lakes in southeast San Diego.
The race begins at Lower Otay Lake Boat Launch on Wueste Road. There is a huge parking lot for runners to easily park for free at the start/finish area. This is a great perk for the race as the starting and finish area are literally adjacent to the free parking lot. This is great for runners as they do not have to arrive early and take a bus to the starting area and when they finish they have access to their vehicle to change clothes and have their own food and drinks available. Alcohol is allowed at Otay Lakes so make sure to pack your cooler with your favorite beverages! They can also leave quickly if they choose without having to wait in a parking lot traffic jam.
Runners arrive, park and have easy access to the check in tent starting at 6am. There are ample bathrooms and port-o-pots available while they wait for the Half Marathon to begin at 7am and the 10K at 7:20. Check in is easy and only requires the runner to show valid ID to get their bib. Same day registration is allowed if the race is not sold out but is not recommended. Racers can register ahead of time at Ultrasignup.com
The course begins on a wide gravel road the winds around the South side of the Lake and past the USA Olympic Training Center. After the first mile the wide road turns to single track trail that runs along the lower lake. The trails are mostly flat allowing for faster race times than are typical in hilly trail races. The first aid station (The Roundabout) is at mile 3 and is supplied with water, electrolyte drink and some form of nutrition. Half Marathon runners will continue around the lake with amazing views and fun technical trail that is easy to follow. 10k runners will turn around and run back to the start/finish area. At roughly mile 5.3 Half Marathon runners will get to the second aid station and will be directed up the asphalt access road for about ¼ mile before turning back onto single track trail. This loop will take them along the North part of the lake winding them back to the Roundabout Aid Station they first encountered.
Runners will now be directed through an access tunnel and up the only real hill in the race. The hill is only ¼ mile and will take runners to the upper Lake and the Otay Dam. The upper lake offers spectacular views and wide double track trail before returning them back to the Roundabout Aid Station for the 3rd time. They will then head back to the start/finish area.
Upon finishing all runners will receive their technical fabric race shirt, custom finisher medal and race logo cup. In the past runners received a glass pint glass but due to new laws regarding glass in county parks glass has been replaced by BPA free race cups. Race awards are given to top 3 overall male and female runners in the Half Marathon and 10K in addition 1st place age category prizes are given in both events. Prizes are provided by our sponsors, Milestones Running Shop, Movin Shoes and Mike Hess Brewing.
Runners can compete in only the Wildhorse Half Marathon or 10K or they can sign up for all the races in the series. See our race page for more info, race videos and more
